When you are looking at the game side of GRIS, what you’re in for is a fairly straightforward and incredibly chill adventure platformer that’ll see you go via a variety of 2D environments, solving light puzzles and using a series of gorgeous transformations that riff on Gris’ personal growth in the face of adversities. It’s free of fail states and rarely mentally taxing but compelling the same thanks mainly to some quantity of interesting ideas and a malleable visual identity that adeptly complements what’s going on in any given moment.
GRIS doesn’t ask for your main time, offering a 4-ish hour journey that you’ll eek ever so a little more from if you’re chasing trophies/achievements, but a lot of stunning views and memorable moments over time and stunning views can be found in that time that each minute will stick with you. I envy anyone entering the game the very first time with this new iteration, but even if you’ve experienced it before you’re sure to catch those feels all once again, believe it or not due to the slick new visual treatment.
All that said, if you’ve played and enjoyed GRIS previously – let it be known this is undeniably exactly the same game. While I’d enthusiastically advocate a replay to anyone, I wouldn’t go so far as saying that the 4K120 presentation is sufficient cause to double-dip in place of the many other compelling indie releases of 2023. If you’re fresh towards the experience, don’t hesitate another, but otherwise consider whether you possess we've got the technology to obtain the most from this new port and/or whether you’ve had your fill of the items GRIS provides before now.
